Choosing a full sleeve, a leg piece or a back piece means planning several sessions, months of healing and one design that holds together from start to finish. People who make that commitment have a reason, and in our Tampa studio we keep hearing the same three: a story that needs space, a piece that gets seen, and an old tattoo that needs covering.
Some ideas have too many parts for a small tattoo: a family history, a memorial portrait, a chapter of military service, a favorite film, the landscape you grew up in. On a large canvas the artist can build a focal point, a background and a composition that follows muscle and bone. Black & grey artists use deep contrast and soft gradients to build atmosphere around the main subject, and color artists use saturation to separate each element. Our post on High Contrast & Soft Gradients shows how that depth works.

A forearm sleeve or a leg piece below the knee is visible every day, and for many clients that is the goal. Others plan the opposite: a chest, back or thigh piece, or a sleeve that sits under a shirt, so the work stays private at the office and shows up when they choose. Either way, size gives the artist room for bold contrast, rich color and a composition that reads from across the room. Our artists have shown that level of work in competition: at the Orlando Tattoo Show 2026, the team took home eight awards, including Best of Day Sunday, and several came in healed categories, where judges see the tattoo after it has healed. Read the full story in our Orlando recap.

Plenty of large pieces begin with a tattoo the client wants to leave behind: a name, an old design, a piece that aged badly. A larger, darker, more detailed design can absorb the old ink into a new composition. Because a cover-up needs room to work, going big is often the most practical route. Our artists plan the new design around what is already there. See how it works on our Cover Ups page, and in our full guide: How a Masterpiece Cover-Up Can Save Your Skin.
Clients often arrive with a collection of small tattoos and a wish to unify them. A single planned sleeve or leg piece gives every element a place, a size and a direction, so each tattoo becomes part of something bigger. Our resident artists work in realism, color, ornamental, Japanese, neo-traditional, blackwork and more, so the style matches the story. Browse the Gallery and meet the Artists to find your match.
Concept comes before ink. Every large project follows the four steps we use for all our work: a consultation to define the idea, placement and style; a custom design; the ink sessions, scheduled once the design is approved; and aftercare guidance so each session heals well before the next one. During the consultation, ask your artist to show healed examples of large pieces, and tell us if you are traveling from another city so the sessions can be planned around your dates.
Large projects are built in sessions, and the total time depends on size, detail and style. Dense realism takes longer than open linework. Your artist maps out a realistic timeline during the consultation.
Pain depends on the area and the person. Ribs, inner arm and the back of the knee are more sensitive than the outer arm or thigh. Longer sessions feel more intense as the hours add up, so planning breaks and healing time between sessions helps.
Price depends on the artist and the piece, so each large project is quoted after a free consultation, where the artist reviews style, size and placement. For larger, more complex designs, we may offer flat rates for half-day and full-day sessions.
Yes. Large pieces are ideal for cover-ups because the new design can be bigger and darker than the old one. Bring a photo to your consultation.
Sleep well, eat a full meal, stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothing that leaves the area accessible. Follow our After Care guide once you are done so every session heals well.
